Medicinal chemistry-based projects require some key activities and a number of routine chemistry operations. The former require the attention of skilled and seasoned NiKem Research personnel, while the latter ones can be executed by less experienced chemists from low labor cost countries.
Low cost chemistry providers are becoming abundant, especially in India and China. Their skills in medicinal chemistry are still limited, and they cannot usually take responsibility for designing and implementing an integrated, medicinal chemistry-driven drug discovery project. On the contrary, their capacity for routine operations can be useful, especially when correctly guided and constantly monitored by our experienced staff.

NiKem has spent the past four years evaluating more than ten low cost providers, and has worked with five of them in order to select reliable partners for “hybrid” model collaborations with clients. As of today, we have identified two preferred partners from India who have repeatedly worked with us for clients, and who guarantee good team attitude, reliability, chemical knowledge and FTE availability.
Within the hybrid model, our clients will only interact with NiKem, while we will coordinate the project activities with the outsourcing partner, and we will closely supervise their work. All confidential information will be contained at NiKem, avoiding confidentiality issues. The Indian partner will only perform routine chemical operations, using chemical routes and protocols assessed at NiKem; the quality of final compounds made by the low cost partner will be certified by NiKem. We will bear full accountability for the success of the project.
We suggest the hybrid model for collaborations where many routine chemical operations are expected, i.e. the synthesis of small-medium arrays of compounds using a few common synthetic routes assessed at NiKem, or multi-project partnerships involving a wide range of iterative chemistries and targets. The client can expect slightly delayed results if compared with a “NiKem only” model, but at a discounted price.
